OUR HISTORY
The Pictou Regional Development Commission (PRDC) was formed in 1991 by the six municipal governments of Pictou County. The municipal leaders of the day determined that a regional voice for economic development would be much more effective than individual efforts. The PRDC was created through their vision. The original challenge for the PRDC was to be a catalyst for growth by supporting the existing business community and seeking out new investment from businesses outside the region.
In 1994, the PRDC became one of thirteen regional development authorities (RDA) in the province. A new partnership was created between the municipalities and the provincial and federal governments and the RDA network was born. With this new association came new responsibilities. The PRDC was asked to expand its efforts into community economic development, addressing both the community as well as the economic needs of the region. This was also the beginning of community strategic planning for the PRDC. In 1995, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, the PRDC released the Pictou County Strategic Plan for Community Economic Development. The third generation of this plan continues to provide direction to the PRDC to this day, as well as direction to other community support agencies.
The PRDC has evolved into a four way partnership of community volunteers, municipal governments, the provincial government and the federal government. By exploring this web site you will learn about RDA’s, our funding partners, our past successes and our plans for the future. Most importantly, you will learn about our services and what we can offer you as you plan for your own successes. We are here to serve.
