12 EASY STEPS IN STARTING A BUSINESS

Whether you are thinking of starting a business or already operate one, the Business Service Centre is an excellent starting point for information, guidance and financing. With all three levels of government represented as well as private sector associations such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Business Service Centre provides you easy access to various agencies.   We also have a library of complete business information available on hard copy text, video or CD-ROM. Access to the Internet is provided on public accessible workstations. Our Centre is designed to be user-friendly, efficient and above all, helpful to you.

The following steps will help you get started.

Discuss your business idea,
contact the Pictou Regional Development Commission at 752-6159.

 

2 Conduct a self-assessment & prepare a Business Plan.

Register your business name with the Registry of  Joint Stock Companies, P.O. Box 1529 Halifax, NS B3J 2Y4 (424-7770), or at any Access Nova Scotia Centre toll-free (1-800-225-8227). Registration may also be done online at:

4 If forming a partnership, obtain a Partnership Agreement from your lawyer.

Register for a Business Number with Revenue Canada. The Business Number (BN) is an account number assigned by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You only need a BN if you require any one of the following business accounts:

  • GST/HST
  • Payroll
  • Corporate income tax
  • Import/Export

7 If you will occupy commercial premises, contact the Regional Manager of Assessment at 485-4372 within one week of opening you business, in order to comply with Business Occupancy Tax legislation.



8 Contact the Pictou County District Planning Commission (755-1390) to check Zoning Laws & By-laws in your area to determine if the location for your business is zoned accordingly and to determine permit or licensing  requirements.

10 Obtain insurance coverage for your business. 




11 Open a current account with your bank, or lender, under the registered name.

Keep a record of all revenues and expenses. You may wish to consult an accountant or bookkeeper.
